UK Photonics Industry Must Connect Higher in the Value Chain. On 16 October 2013, Carlos Lee, Director General of the European Photonics Industry Consortium, moderated a discussion with executives from the UK photonics industry. In conjunction with the Photonex UK exhibition, he approached the discussion from an international perspective of how various regions in the world and countries in Europe support their photonics industry. While governments need to ensure a supportive - MORE>>

Micro-thermography with new ImageIR® 9300 camera. Being able to accurately measure temperature changes during product or component use or in a manufacturing process is becoming of great importance to industry. Newly introduced to the UK by Armstrong Optical Ltd., the ImageIR® 9300 thermography camera manufactured by InfraTec GmbH in Germany has been developed to ensure that such measurements can be made not only with great accuracy but in a non-contact fashion.
The ImageIR® 9300 takes advantage of the very latest cooled thermography sensor technology allowing radiometric measurements to be made at high frame rates with the highest available thermal and spatial resolution - MORE>>
Diffractive Optics. Diffractive optics continue to edge their way into industry. Applications include laser micro-machining, skin treatment and spectroscopy. Of course, different elements are optimised for each of these, for example a Top Hat DOE would ideally be used for laser welding. The uniform image area and sharp edges create a clear border between treated and untreated regions. LASER COMPONENTS is able to provide homogenisers, beam samplers and multispot DOEs, all of which are offered as standard elements or customised for demanding applications.
A recent development in our DOE product range is the introduction of a very small Top Hat for f-theta lenses (~1.5 times the diffraction limit). Capable of being used in scanning instruments or other - MORE>>
Small area solar simulators for PV cell researchers. Oriel Instruments’ new series of LCS-100 solar simulators has been designed for PV cell researchers requiring the performance of a certified system over a small area of illumination. The 1.5 x 1.5 inch (38 x 38 mm) simulators meet Class ABB as defined by ASTM, IEC and JIS standards. The compact design features an integrated power supply, ignitor, homogenizer and lamp housing. Thanks to the simple “drop-in” lamp assembly, Oriel’s LCS-100 Series requires no lamp alignment.
The LCS-100 Series generates over 1 sun irradiance with an AM1.5G filter. With the integrated variable attenuator, users can reduce the irradiance to achieve 1 sun. As the lamp ages, the attenuator can be opened to allow continued 1 sun operation over the entire - MORE>>
