Laser Safety - the essentials
A short course
Now fifty years old, laser technology is utilised today in an amazingly extensive range of applications, many of which would have been entirely unforeseen back in the 1960s. While each new application presents its own challenges, the need to deal appropriately with the hazards that lasers may present extends across all disciplines in which lasers are used.
This short course will cover the essentials of laser safety for those who build or use laser equipment. It will discuss the harm that lasers can cause, identify the safety standards that apply to laser products and laser protection and will explain how laser risks should be controlled.
It will include -
- The properties of laser beams
- Why lasers can be harmful to the eyes and the skin
- Other laser hazards
- Safety regulations, standards and guidelines
- Hazard classes and product safety requirements
- Safety precautions and control procedures
The course will be suitable for those who are relatively new to laser technology, as well as for those with more experience who need to update their knowledge of the latest safety standards and requirements. The training will be given by Roy Henderson of Bioptica in Cambridge, a well-known consultant in laser safety who teaches widely on the subject.
