Optically Pumped Semiconductor Laser (OPSL) Technology

Wide range of output power and wavelength scalability allow OPSLs to be tailored to the needs of your specific application.

In 2001, Coherent introduced a new proprietary technology called Optically Pumped Semiconductor Laser technology (OPSL), offering the first commercial solid-state 488 nm and 460 nm lasers (Sapphire family of lasers) in the tens of mW power levels.

Since 2001, there have been several advancements made to this technology:

  • A high power version of this OPSL technology has been designed specifically for the entertainment industry - our Venom family of entertainment lasers, with wavelengths at 532 nm (Green), 577 nm (Gold) and 460 nm(True Blue).
  • A new family of OPSLs has been developed for laser photocoagulation treatment of wet-form macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy - our OPSL-532/577 lasers comprising of a 5 Watt green laser with output at 532 nm, and the unique 3 Watt yellow laser with output at 577 nm.

What is an Optically Pumped Semiconductor Laser (OPSL)?

Optically pumped semiconductor lasers belong to a class of devices called Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VECSELs). This term describes semiconductor diodes that emit perpendicular to the layer structure rather than through the edge. Typical VECSELs are driven by electrical current, just like standard diode lasers. In contrast, an OPSL uses optical pumping to drive the laser emission. Optical pumping provides higher power with excellent spatial mode quality, which is not achievable with electrical pumping. These unique characteristics provide the basis for intra-cavity Second Harmonic Generation (SHG), allowing the OPSL to generate laser emission with superior beam properties in the visible region. OPSL technology is well proven over several years in both laboratory and rugged field applications, with over 10,000 lasers in use for bioinstrumentation and crime-scene forensics.
